Solution 1: Escape to the Moon
This sculpture is a surrealist documentation of a journey between two trapped lovers who must escape to reunite. With imagery that references the canon of Chicano painters, the viewer is ushered through a landscape where dreams are concurrently achieved and distant. Three wheel-thrown vessels symbolize distinct states of being. One in which a male figure is behind a cage, an underworld below him and an explosion above that provides the opportunity for escape. An upside down bowl is the swirling trap of the woman, who longs for her lover, and transforms her anguish into momentum to begin the sojourn to an unknown land. The lovers meet at last at the end of a road, in a place without air: the moon. The moon vessel is finished with a crater glaze and is guarded by an observing bird. We wonder if the meeting ever happens at all. The title suggests that there are other answers, to longing, pain, and entrapment. With thousands of people globally separated from their loved ones, a question has been born within our hearts: when will we meet again? Possibly, only in our dreams.
